Ayurveda: Healthy Eating and Living
Many people are unfamiliar with the ideas and philosophy of Ayurveda. The word means "the science of life" This implies that we are able to heal our bodies from within, each taking responsibility for our own health and wellness. The concepts of Ayurveda date back around 5000 years ago and have been constantly tested and tried throughout the years. The science has been based on watching and observing people in real settings, rather than placing a group of people in a controlled environment to "test" a drug or new age diet.
Ayurveda uses food, herbs, color, mantra, breathing, yoga, prayer, scents, and seasonal routines to balance our bodies. You will find that within this science is a whole wealth of ideas for new foods, spices, and a more peaceful way of looking at yourself and how you interact with your body.
Each person is unique and as such we must learn to listen and observe what we need in order to stay balanced. The problem lies when we are so out of balance that our bodies have cravings and desire foods that are not good for us to eat. Ayurveda states that an apple can be nectar for one and poison to another depending on how each person digests it.
So how do we determine what is good for us and what will cause heaviness, lethargy, soreness, bloated bellies, and gas? Answering a few key questions with a qualified Ayurveda specialist will help you determine what your constitution is and then you can move forward from there. BUT the key to true understanding is listening to the body. How do you feel after you eat. Are you bloated, do you have gas or feel very hot in the belly...like acid reflux. Then choose foods that may not allow these responses to happen. It sounds easy enough, but I know that we need a lot of lessons before we actually listen to what we are being told by our insides. Take a look at your B.M in the morning and that will give you a good indication of what is going on inside.
So if you are curious about what your body type is and would like to be more balanced in your mind and body, then come in for a private one on one consultation. I (Becca) will help you to understand what food choices will be the best for you. As well, if you are struggling with what to cook, you can join me at my house for group or personal cooking classes.
